Why do people think Librans are conflict avoidant?

Libras role does not escape conflict, it helps others understand it. They are not conflict avoidant at all. Librans are conflict fluent. The most harmonious of all the zodiac.

All to often I hear people make comments along the lines of ‘ Oh Libra’s avoid confrontation’ or ‘Libra’s hide from conflict’ or they are often described as conflict avoidant, but as a Libran myself, I feel the need to speak up on behalf of my fellow balancers, and state (calmly) that you all have misunderstood us entirely!

It is by no coincidence or weird twist of fate that Libra is the only sign of the zodiac represented not by a person or an animal, but by an object. The Scales. What is exceptional about the scales, is they have no agenda of their own, no angle, no opinion to push, but most importantly, they do not judge. That is not their role in this world, and definitely never their purpose in your existence.

‘The Scales’ simply respond accordingly to what is placed upon them, their role to constantly seek equilibrium. If you are heavy, they will respond with heaviness, if you are playful they will match that joy, if you are loud, you will bring out the extrovert in them…and so on… In many ways, this is the Libran’s path. ‘Maintaining balance, but being mistaken for peace keeping’ .

You can guarantee in every situation the Libran amongst you has already played out every possible scenario and outcome, resolved every problem, and chartered the best course for everyone involved, often at the detriment of themselves. Because one of their best (or worst) traits, is their unwavering selflessness. They won’t put themselves first if they know fundamentally that would not result in the best outcome for the majority involved in the problem. They are forever weighing perspectives, measuring fairness, sensing where balance has been disturbed and quietly trying to restore it.

But with that universal role, often comes exhausting and overwhelming responsibility. Many Librans I know (and there are many!) are often facing burn out, confusion, misalignment and health problems, mostly caused by carrying the weight of managing the conflict of the people around them. And while the outside world is busy accusing Librans of avoiding conflict, the reality is, they spend most of their lives living right in the middle of it.

So the real question is why? – Why can’t Librans just tell people to ‘fuck off’ and let them sort their own wars out.

If we look at the astrological placements, Libra is the first sign of the zodiac to meet its opposite. It marks the moment where consciousness moves beyond the self and into relationship, where ‘I’ becomes ‘we.’ From this point onwards, every lesson is learned through our connection with others, birthing their selflessness very early on. Libra is the first sign asked to stand between two perspectives and discover that both can hold truth.

You’ve probably seen that Facebook picture that’s been doing the rounds for years of two people looking at a number from either end, arguing over whether they are looking at a number six, or a number nine. Both are right, both is true, but if neither person shifts or is willing to see from another perspective, both will continue to be right, and wrong, at the same time – Schrodinger’s number, so to speak! Libra have the benefit (or curse) of immediately seeing the situation from every vantage point – they see a six, and a nine, they see that both parties are right, and wrong, at the same time. So, they are able to sweep in, explain, change viewpoints, shift perspectives, allow for communication and understanding to occur, essentially dampening the flames of conflict, before the fire ignites fully, then sweep back out again, usually before anyone even noticed they were there.

Perhaps this is why so many Librans become the silent mediators of the world. Quietly observing and reconciling from a distance, and those found within families, workplaces, friendships and communities, instinctively navigate the tension between opposing views. They often become the translators between people who can no longer hear one another, the calm presence during emotional storms, the one searching not for victory, but for resolution.

The irony is that the more skilled the Libran becomes at holding balance for everyone else, the less visible their own burdens become. People mistake their calmness for comfort, when often it has been earned through years of carrying the emotional weight of other people’s disagreements. They assume the Libra dislikes conflict, when in truth they have simply spent a lifetime understanding its cost. Not because they enjoy discord, but because they understand that peace is not created by avoiding difficult conversations. It is created by having the courage to stand between opposing forces without becoming one of them. To hold compassion for both sides. To remain steady while the scales settle. That is their burden, their role.

Maybe that has always been Libra’s true purpose; not to escape conflict, but to actively run towards it, transforming it into harmony.

But be warned..! NEVER take a Libran for granted. You may think you can push their boundaries, and to some degree you can, but they know you're doing it... NOTHING goes unnoticed by a Libran. Your deepest vulnerabilities are written all over you when you sit in front of them, they SEE you for what you are, and they always did. But rest assured, they will never judge you for it, never question your behaviour, your choices, your actions, or speak your secrets... But know this, when they're done, they're really done. There's no coming back to a Libran once the relationship is over, the trust is broken, the boundary violated...

...You will lose the best friend you could have ever had, the loudest cheerleader, the most reliable companion, the deepest thinker...

...So check in on them occasionally and treat them well, or one day you will turn around and realise they are gone.
