The Flickering of Memories

There is something ancient and familiar about sitting beside a fire...

Long before words were written, before roads were carved into the land, our stories were carried in the glow of dancing flames - Sharing teachings, wisdom and connection with those around it. When I settle beside a fire pit, something deep within me remembers. The crackle of the wood is more than sound - it is a language older than memory, whispering to the ancestors who still live quietly within my bones. Their echoes stir in the rhythm of the embers, and for a little while, I feel less alone, held and supported by someone, somewhere in time.

The warmth of the fire doesn’t only reach externally, it finds its way to places I cannot always name. It wraps itself around forgotten corners of my soul, softening what life has hardened and reminding me that I, too, belong to the wild heartbeat of the earth. Around a fire there is no need to rush, no need to yearn and no expectation to become anything other than what I already am.

The flames rise and bow, dancing with joyful abandon, never holding the same shape twice, beautiful in their ever changing unpredictability. Their confidence and light awakens something within me that everyday life can so easily bury, a quiet, childlike joy, a spark of wonder that refuses to be extinguished.

The fire does not ask me to carry yesterday or worry about tomorrow. It simply invites me to be here, now, in this sacred moment, where warmth, light and breath become one.

Perhaps that is why I return to the fire, time and again. Not only for its heat, but because it reminds me of who I have always been. A keeper of stories, a seeker of light, a descendant of those who also gathered beneath the stars, watching flames reach for the heavens, finding comfort, courage and belonging in their dance.

And as the sparks drift skyward, I cannot help but wonder if they carry tiny pieces of our gratitude back to those who came before us, letting them know that they’re still felt, still remembered, that the fire still burns… and so do we.
